Warriors sign talented trio

Tue, 06 May 2008 08:32

Glasgow Warriors are delighted to announce the signings of three young Scottish players from Glasgow clubs for next season.

Two of the three players, loose forward Calum Forrester and flyhalf Ruaridh Jackson (Glasgow Hawks), have graduated into the professional ranks from Scottish Rugby's National Academy whilst prop John Welsh steps up straight from club level having impressed head coach Sean Lineen with his performances for Glasgow Hutchesons Aloysians and the Scotland Club International team.

All three players have signed until 2010.

"Calum [Forrester] has been working with us for a while now and I've been very impressed with his attitude and ability," said Lineen.

"He's been involved with the Scotland Sevens team so I'm expecting big things from him and he'll be a great addition to our Scottish loose forward contingent.

"I'm excited by this find," Lineen said of John Walsh.

"John could well prove to be a real gem. He's working very hard in the gym right now but it just proves that there are players in the club game that can come through to the professional level," he added.

Lineen was equally excited about the signing of Jackson, saying: "I first noticed Ruaridh [Jackson] playing for Robert Gordon's College at the Scottish Schools' Sevens at Murrayfield."

"He is yet to realise his full potential but I'm confident he'll get there by being involved in a professional environment," said Lineen.

Both Forrester and Aberdeen-born Jackson have also represented Scotland Sevens on the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series and the man who has seen their progress through the National Academy system and coached them at international sevens level, Stephen Gemmell, had much praise for the two players.

"Both Calum and Ruaridh have worked hard over the last number of years and have really bought into the Academy system which has had a positive impact on their performance," said Gemmell.

"Their progress is very much deserved and I wish them both all the very best for the future with Glasgow Warriors," he concluded.
