Phillips has high hopes for Sharks

Phillips has joined Sale Sharks from Racing 92, and is a highly regarded scrumhalf in world rugby.

He signed for the club back in May and is one of ten new signings for them.

"It's been great, I've really enjoyed it first week back, settling in I'm getting to know the area and getting to know my new teammates and everyone's been great," Philips said.

"It's definitely a team moving in the right direction. Last year was a really good season for Sale and hopefully, we can build on that this year now. The club has high hopes and it's a privilege to part of that to be part of something new happening here."

He added: "It's a team that's hard working, very talented and moving in the right direction; they are playing in the Champions Cup and have great values and great work ethic.

"For me to be a part of that is great and I want to learn and hopefully I can add to the team in whatever way I can.

"I've gone in to every game wanting to win, winning is everything I guess and it starts in training – having high standards and you've got to take that onto the field. Winning is a very tough thing in this league, every team is of a high quality; the boys did really well last year and if we build on them performances I'm sure we will be okay. I just want to add to the team in any way I can. "

Phillips admitted he did his research about the Sharks before joining the club: "I spoke a lot to Dwayne Peel, not just about Dimes, but about the club, the area, and everything to do with Sale and he spoke well of everything.

"Other Welsh lads who played for the club also spoke highly about the coaches and everything it was just an easy decision to come here so I'm just massively excited to start this new chapter in my career."

Phillips will be up against young scrum half James Mitchell and Irish legend Peter Stringer for the number 9 jersey this season, and it's a rivalry that the Welshman is looking forward to: "You have three different scrum halves here.

"It's a challenge in itself. I'm sure we will all want to play every game but it's great competition, which is great for the squad and Sale Sharks. Those two guys have been really helpful for me settling in so there's a good relationship there so hopefully we can all help each other."
