Chiefs ease past Warriors

Chiefs ease past WarriorsThe home side wasted no time in getting started as Jack Yeandle and Will Chudley scored first half tries, while debutante referee Matthew O’Grady awarded a penalty try shortly after.

And in the second-half the floodgates opened as Olly Woodburn, Carl Rimmer, Thomas Waldrom, James Short and Ian Whitten each scored.

Worcester also improved after the break and went close to a bonus point themselves, as Josh Adams, Wynand Olivier and Dewald Potgieter all scored tries, to give the away fans something to shout about.

Exeter director of ruby Rob Baxter opted to keep an unchanged side, with Kai Horstmann retaining his place in the starting line-up.

And it paid dividends from the first whistle, as a powerful maul saw hooker and club captain Yeandle power over from close range.

Worcester handed first Premiership Rugby starts to academy duo Jack Singleton and Andrew Kitchener as injuries took hold, and they struggled to compete with the speed of Exeter’s game.

Flyhalf Gareth Steenson added a penalty for the Chiefs from in front of the posts, and they added a second try shortly after.

Powerful back-row Waldrom went close after another set-piece but he was brought down metres short and scrum-half Chudley sneaked through a gap to score.

Worcester got on the board through a Jamie Shillcock penalty, but the Chiefs opened up a commanding lead from another driving maul.

Warriors lock Darren Barry was sin-binned for illegally bringing it down and referee O’Grady awarded a penalty try.

And the bonus point was confirmed shortly after half time as Chudley counter-attacked from deep after an impressive Warriors spell and he played it through for Woodburn to score.

That took the wind out of Worcester’s sails and the Chiefs took advantage as substitute prop Rimmer broke down Worcester’s defence after Exeter hammered away for several phases.

Waldrom, such an important part of Exeter’s attack, scored minutes later as he powered his way over before Worcester responded through in-form Adams.

But Short made sure their joy was short lived as the winger dotted down in the corner for the Chiefs seventh try.

The Warriors, who opened the game up even more late on, scored their second through Olivier before Whitten added his name to the scoresheet.

And the visitors rounded things off through Potgieter late on.
