Solomons: 'Duncan Weir was outstanding'

A superlative kicking display from Duncan Weir and first-half scores from Mike Allen and Magnus Bradbury secured a 20-9 win over Scarlets at BT Murrayfield.

After conceding four tries in a 34-16 defeat to Cardiff Blues on the opening weekend Solomons made five changes to his starting XV, including two in the back-row and one at lock.

The coach also praised his side defence. Solomons admired the way his side fronted up to the error of their ways the week prior, in what were difficult conditions, was an encouraging sight.

"Overall I’m very happy. The big thing for us is that in the opening matches our defence has been sub-standard," he said.

"There was a bit of an improvement against Cardiff but it wasn’t good enough and we made a big issue of it.

"The boys did really well. Our ability to play the conditions allied to an improved defence won us that match.

"We showed a tremendous amount of character at the end of the game in keeping them out.

"On balance, I thought we deserved to win the game and the scoreline was a fair reflection on the rugby,"

Weir’s ten points, decision making and kicking from hand proved decisive on the night as opposite number Rhys Patchell struggled.

And with new faces settling in, the defence improving and the decision makers delivering, Solomons insists there is much to be positive about.

"I thought he had a superb game," he added.

"The way he played the conditions was absolutely vital. The players said it was very difficult conditions – wet and a tricky wind as well.

"I thought Duncan [Weir] was outstanding. He ran the game well, his decision making was good and his kicking was excellent,"
