Sutherland and Fowles commit to capital club

Both players have signed a two-year contract extension, keeping them at Edinburgh until May 2019.

Sutherland, 24, joined the capital club on an Academy contract in 2014 after impressing for Gala in the Premiership, before graduating to a fully professional deal the following season.

Borders born-and-bred, Sutherland made his Scotland debut when he came off the bench to face Ireland in the final game of the 2016 Six Nations, before going on to make a further two appearances, donning the thistle against Japan on the national team's 2016 Summer Tour.

Sutherland has made 51 competitive appearances in the black and red since debuting against Munster in the 2014/15 season.

On signing a new deal with the capital club, he said: "I've enjoyed my two-and-a-half years with Edinburgh and the club has done me well. Everything is moving forward and I'm really happy to be a part of the team for another two seasons.

"Duncan [Hodge] has brought in a real attacking edge to the Edinburgh game, which I think will suit the way I want and like to play.

"There's a good feeling around the club just now and I feel that this is the right place for me to stay to take my rugby to the next level and try to continue being involved in the Scotland set-up.”

Acting Head Coach Duncan Hodge said: "Securing Rory [Sutherland] for another two seasons is a huge boost for the squad.

"He's accomplished a lot in his first few years at the club – clocking up 50 Edinburgh appearances.

"His hard work was rewarded earlier this year when he was capped by the national team.

"Front-row is an area where we have a lot of experience and competition and Rory has used this to his advantage, as he works with those around him to continue developing his own game.”

Fowles has made 25 appearances since moving to the club on loan in February 2015, scoring 18 points from the kicking tee.

The half-back, who qualifies for Scotland through his Edinburgh-born grandfather, extended his initial loan-deal ahead of the 2015/16 season, before subsequently agreeing new terms for another year at Edinburgh Rugby.

On penning a new deal, Fowles said: "I feel that the club is moving in the right direction and there's a lot to look forward to in the next few years. I'm delighted to be staying.

"We're developing well as a team, in the way we want to play the game and the speed we want to play at, which is exciting for the players and fans.

"The three of us [scrum-halves Fowles, Sam Hidalgo-Clyne and Sean Kennedy] work really well with each other in that competitive environment, always pushing each other.

"It's good for the team, as well as individually, as it keeps us all on our toes. We know when we get a shot we've got to play well.”

Hodge, added: "We're delighted with the way Nathan's game is developing and, as coaches, we know he has a lot more to offer Edinburgh over the coming seasons.

"He works extremely hard in training and is always looking to learn from those around him, whether that be coaches or other players.

"We're in a good position in terms of competition at scrum-half with Nathan, Sam [Hidalgo-Clyne] and Sean [Kennedy] working well together to develop each other's game while vying for the starting spot each week."
