Four Africans carry on qualifying

Sun, 03 Aug 2008 20:14

After four matches in the Africa Cup which doubled as World Cup qualifiers, four teams go on to the next qualifying round - Côte d’Ivoire, Namibia, Tunisia and Uganda. The next qualifying round is in 2009. One of the four will go as the Africa qualifier to New Zealand in 2011.

Namibia have qualified for the last three World Cups, Côte d’Ivoire for one. The other African qualifier is Zimbabwe, in 1987 and 1991, but they were knocked out on Saturday.

Pool B

Cote d’Ivoire vs Morocco, 21-9

This is the first time that the Ivoreans have beaten Morocco and they did so in ancient Casablanca. It is a surprise win but recalls the Ivoreans feat of 1995 when they qualified for the World Cup in South Africa. For the Moroccans who have not yet been to a World Cup the defeat was disappointing, but they managed just two penalties in the first half and one in the second. They did not score a try.

The Moroccans acknowledged that the Ivoreans, 14 of whom play professionally in Europe and for whom Marc Yoube, Meïte Issa and Bakkary, Jouve Serge, Gassa Diack and Kaudio Louis were outstanding, deserved their victory but they were most upset by the refereeing of the Tunisian, Hiekel Bahroum.

The president of the Royal Moroccan Rugby Federation, Saïd Bouhajeb, offered the Ivoreans training facilities for the next round, at the expense of the Moroccan Federation.

Morocco squad: Samir Amechtane (Poitiers, France), Ayoub El Mouhcine (Oyonnax, France), Yousef El Mir (Fus, Morocco), Hammam Arabi (Ramo, Morocco), Mohamed Gouasmia (Périgueux, France), Othmane Lahlali (Fus, France), Yassine Benlahoucine (Orléans, France), Abdellatif Boutati (Montauban, France), Karim Dahbi (Auch, France), Hamza Zouhair (Bourg En Bresse, France), Anouar Akram Rhaili (La Teste, France), Adil Achahbar (Grenoble, France), Said Akarmoudi (Dax, France), Jérôme Carrere (Toulon, France), Tidjini Mehadji (Colomiers, France), Mouad Labbi (Carcassonne, France), Mohamed Hajjaji (Mco, Morocco), Samir Thevenot (Oyonnax, France), Samir Ait Oufkir (La Rochelle, France), Karim Abbad (Mont De Marsan, France), Fathallah Moumen (Coc, Morocco), Thomas Janik (Rouen, France), Abdelkafi Abachri (Lavaur, France), Said Bajja (Castres, France)

Pool D

Uganda vs Madagascar, 32-22

It was hard and tough, four players were sent to the sin bin and Uganda just managed to rally to win, making the match safe only in the last ten minutes.

At half-time the Makis led the Cranes 11-10 after two penalties and a try for Madagascar and converted try and a penalty for Uganda,

In the second half Lubega scored a second try before being taken off with a head wound and then Allan Musoke scored a brilliant try before the Makis got a try. With penalties each way, the score was now 25-22 to Uganda. But from a maul Steven Obwete scored a try which Edmond Tumusiime converted.
