Brazil, who are having a great international year, moved closer to the next round of World Cup qualifiers when they beat Trinidad & Tobago 31-8 in Port of Spain on Saturday, the first leg of their qualifier.

The teams meet again in Sao Paulo this Saturday, a daunting task for the Calypso Warriors as Brazil now look set to join Uruguay and Chile in the next qualifying round.

This year Brazil have beaten Colombia (34-6), Venezuela (56-8), Peru (59-0), Paraguay (15-6) and now Trinidad & Tobago.

For the home side, the result was a huge disappointment but still they are facing Sao Paulo with renewed determination.

From the start the Brazilians were on top and in no time they went 8-0 up with a penalty and then a try from the subsequent kick-off till by half-time they led 16-3.

The second half was much the same story even though Trinidad & Tobago scored first when they got their try. But then the visitors got two more tries.

Afterwards the Warriors' captain, Adam Fredericks, said: “We were just out of it for a bit early on. We tried to get back but we didn't capitalise on our breaks.”

Coach Rhett Chee Ping, who in his day played for Trinidad & Tobago, said:  “It was very demoralising."
