Borthwick: 'World Cup incentive is huge'

Fri, 31 Jul 2009 09:27

Happy man: Saracens captain Steve Borthwick

National captain Steve Borthwick says he is hugely excited at the prospect of the 2015 Rugby World Cup taking place in England and insists that he could still be a part of the team in six years time and get to enjoy the spectacle himself.

Borthwick, who will be 36 by the time the World Cup reaches England’s shores, admits age may be against him but says he is confident the motivation of playing in rugby’s greatest tournament, on home soil, will be enough to keep him in contention.

"I'm no spring chicken but don't rule me out,” he said to an RFU Podcast on Friday.

"It's really exciting, the sport that's coming to this side of the world. We've got the Olympics, the Rugby World Cup and hopefully the Football World Cup, it's excellent.

"Just thinking back to when I was a kid watching the '91 cup final it's definitely something that inspired me, it made me want to go on and represent my country at rugby. From a rugby players' point of view, an incentive like that will make every player want it."
