A good team effort from New Zealand held off a second half fightback from the USA and tries from Regan Ware, Dylan Collier, and Kurt Baker got Kiwis on the board.

A brilliant solo run from deep by Maka Unufe provided the USA with their first of two tries, before Zach Test crossed the whitewash for the Americans, but it wasn't enough as the Kiwis bagged a 19-12 victory to avoid slumping into the Bowl for the first time in history.

A 21-all draw against Argentina wasn't enough to keep Japan's quarter-final hopes alive as Axel Muller expertly gathered a neat grubber kick at pace to score before Segundo Tuculet took Japan out of Cup contention with another try.

Fiji looked most likely to score in the second half with only a couple of handling errors preventing them stretching further out in front and outstanding work at the breakdown near the England line won Fiji the possession and Kitione Taliga, who set up the position in the first place with a storming run, dotted down in the corner to seal victory.
