"But even after that it's just as exciting with the Commonwealth Games in 2018 on home soil and the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco too.

"We're looking to build depth in the program and I'm looking forward to being able to pass on my knowledge to the new players looking to make their mark over the next two years" he concluded.

"Ed has been with us through the days when the Sevens was perceived as more of a development tool to higher honours which was tough, and in my opinion he deserves the opportunity to ride this new wave of support for the game of Sevens."

In a further boost to Friend's squad, John Porch has inked a new two-year deal after impressing in his five World Series tournaments during the 2015-16 season, while exciting 18-year-old prospect Josh Coward has signed his first professional rugby contract with the Sevens program.
