Las Vegas 7s: Big teams get through

South Africa was in a ruthless mood in their final game of the day as they brushed France aside 31-0. Canada kept themselves in the running for a Cup play-off spot when they toppled Wales 24-21. Canada and France will go head to head for the final Cup spot from Pool A.

Tournament hosts USA and England ensured their progression to the Cup quarterfinals when they came through the day with two victories apiece. The sides will face each other on Day Two to determine who tops Pool B.

New Zealand may not have set the tournament alive just yet but have done enough to secure their passage into the Cup quarterfinals, while Argentina and Kenya will have to win their final matches to advance.

Fiji and Australia will duke it out for top honours in Pool D after both sides came through Day One unscathed, following victories over Scotland and Japan respectively.

Fiji opened the scoring with an unconverted try in the first minute but Scotland got themselves level after five minutes of play. The Pacific Islanders got themselves in the lead once again when they bagged their second unconverted try with the final play of the first half.

Fiji extended their lead to 17-5 with an early converted try but Scotland got themselves back in the contest with a converted try of their own to trail 12-17. However, Fiji were just too strong as they scored a second converted try to close out the match.

Australia 19-12 Japan

Japan hit the ground running and found reward with a converted try to take an early 7-0 lead but Australia were soon level with a score of their own. Japan faltered on defence and were punished for it as an unconverted try handed Australia a 12-7 lead just before half-time.

Australia were not letting up in the second half though as they extended their lead to 19-7, compliments of another converted try. Japan did most of the attacking from that point but only managed a consolation try in the final play of the match to end on a positive note.

Argentina 14-14 Kenya

The game got off to a fast start as Kenya opened the scoring to take a 7-0 lead but it did not take long for Argentina to hit back as they drew level. Kenya looked to go coast to coast in the final minute but Argentina managed to gain possession to score in the corner and take a 14-7 lead at half-time.

Kenya got themselves back on level terms early in the second half. Both sides threw everything they had into finding the winning points but it was not meant to be as they shared the spoils.

New Zealand 19-5 Russia

New Zealand made the start they would have wanted by grabbing an early seven-pointer, although they failed to make the most of a few attacking opportunities from that point. They were punished for that in the final play of the half when Russia touched down in the corner to trail 5-7 at the break.

Russia found themselves trailing by seven points, 5-12, early in the second half as New Zealand scored another try, this time in the corner. Russia went in search of more points and launched a promising attack in the final minute of the encounter. They lost the ball though ad New Zealand took full advantage to turn it into a converted try to seal the win.

United States 31-0 Chile

The United States did not have it all their way in the opening minutes as Chile put up a brave fight. It did not last too long though as they ran in three tries – two converted – to head into the half-time interval with a healthy 19-0 lead.

The tournament hosts hit the cruise button in the second half but still managed to add a further 12 points to shut Chile out.

England 12-7 Samoa

It took England a few minutes to break the deadlock with an unconverted try after absorbing some pressure in the opening stages. Samoa remained pinned inside their half for much of the half and conceded a second try on the stroke of half-time to trail 0-12.

Samoa got themselves on the board in the second half with a breakaway try that started on their own 22 to cut the deficit to 7-12 with three minutes remaining in the match. The momentum was with Samoa from that point but determined defence by England saw them hang on for the win.

Wales 21-24 Canada

A well-executed line-out set move saw Canada take a 7-0 lead after four minutes but Wales hit back with a seven-pointer of their own to level matters a minute later. Canada finished the half on the front foot though as they bagged a second try to take a 12-7 lead into the break.

Wales hit back in the opening minute of the second half to regain the lead, 14-12, following a converted try. The lead exchanged hands again when Canada bagged a five-pointer but Wales hit back with a seven-pointer in the final minute to take a 21-17 lead.

Wales stole the victory with the final play of the match when they bagged a converted try.

South Africa 31-0 France

Justin Geduld got the scoring going in the fourth minute when he rounded off a patient build up. He failed with the conversion though but it mattered little as Rosco Speckman stretched their lead in the sixth minute. Geduld added the extras to ensure a 12-0 lead.

Geduld remained in the action and bagged his brace with the final play of the half when he showed his pace to score. He missed the conversion yet again but the Blitzboks led 19-0 at the break.

France put up a fight in the second half but they could not stop the Blitzboks as Siviwe Soyizwapi got his name on the scoreboard when he rose highest to pluck the ball out the air. Cecil Afrika's conversion extended the lead to 24-0 in the 11th minute.

The Blitzboks were not taking their foot off the gas in the closing minutes as Werner Kok ran a brilliant line to score under the posts in the final minute. Afrika's easy conversion closed out the match.
