SYDNEY SEVENS: BlitzBoks, NZ continue fine form

New Zealand and South Africa have yet to concede points in the tournament and both secured their places in the Cup quarterfinals with victories over Samoa and Spain.

There were also wins for Fiji, Argentina, Kenya, England, USA and Australia.

Pool A:

(New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Russia)

Russia put up a big fight in their match against Fiji, but the Fijians were too classy in the end.

Fiji opened the scoring with a try in the fifth minute after some stern defence from the Russians. The Pacific Islanders then scored another just before half-time for a comfortable 14-0 lead at the break.

Fiji scored another two tries without reply in the second half to eventually win 24-0.

New Zealand continued their strong defensive display in their match against Samoa.

Two tries in the first half gave the New Zealanders and comfortable 12-0 lead at the break.

The Samoans could not find an answer to New Zealand's game in the second half with the latter running in another three tries to win 31-0.

Results:

New Zealand 31-0 Samoa

Fiji 24-0 Russia

New Zealand 61-0 Russia

Fiji 31-5 Samoa

Pool B:

(Argentina, France, Wales, Kenya)

Kenya needed a win against France to keep their Cup hopes alive and they had to dig deep to achieve that.

After opening the scoring, the Kenyans fell behind when France hit back with two converted tries to lead 14-5 at the half-time break.

But the Kenyans were not going to lie down and the second half they scored two unanswered tries without reply to edge the French 17-14. 

There were plenty of tries in the match between Argentina and Wales.

There was nothing two choose between the two sides in the first half with both sides scoring two converted tries for a 14-14 scoreline at the break.

Argentina ran up a 14-0 lead before allowing Wales to score two tries of the own.

However, like the first half, it was Argentina who took control again with two converted tries in the opening minutes of the second half.

Wales hit back with a try two minutes before the end, but they could not get the vital score which would have given them the chance to tie the game.

In the end, Argentine won 28-21

France 14-17 Kenya

Argentina 7-5 Kenya

France 31-12 Wales

Pool C:

(South Africa, England, Spain, Papua New Guinea)

Rosko Specman continued his fine form into Day Two when he scored two tries for the BlitzBoks' in the first half of their match against Spain.

Adding two conversions, the South Africans were leading 14-0 at the half-time break.

The BlitzBoks upped the tempo in the second half with Ruhan Nel, Justin Geduld and Seabelo Senatla running in tries before Dylan Sage completed the thrashing with a try of his own before full-time.

It was not a good start for Papua New Guinea in their match against England.

PNG were reduced to six men with a yellow card in the first minute and that gave England the opportunity to open the scoring with a try.

Two tries later, England were in a comfortable position at 21-0 at the half-time break.

The English scored another two tries in the second half with Papua New Guinea getting a consolation score before going down 5-35.

Results:

South Africa 38-0 Spain 

England 35-5 Papua New Guinea

South Africa 50-0 Papua New Guinea

England 22-10 Spain

Pool D:

(Canada, USA, Australia, Scotland)

The USA brought down Scotland back down to earth on Day Tww with an impressive 26-12 win.

The Americans were outstanding in the first half scoring four tries to lead 26-0 at the half-time break.

Scotland were more competitive in the second half and they did manage to hit back with two tries, but the game was already in the bag for the USA after their first-half performance. 

Canada made hosts Australia sweat when they opened the scoring with a try in the final match in Round Two.

However, it did not take long for Australia to hit back with captain Lewis Holland running in two tries for a 10-5 score at the break.

Australia scored another three tries in the second half to eventually win 27-5.

USA 26-12 Scotland

Canada 5-52 Scotland

USA 19-26 Australia
