The Russian Bear conquers

Sat, 08 Nov 2008 19:16

Russia continued where they left off last season with a big 42-15 victory over Spain in cold Moscow.

This is a great start for Russia and a disappointment for Spain as at the end of the competition in 2010 the top two teams will have an automatic ticket to the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Spain actually scored first when Mathieu Gratton goaled a penalty after 12 minutes but then two penalties by Yuriy Kushnarev gave Russia a lead which was not serious threatened.

From a maul close to the Spanish line, Evgeniy Matveev scored a try which Kushnarev converted.

In an 8-9 move from a scrum, Julien Elgouyhen gave to Pablo Feijoo who scored. 13-8 after 36 minutes, but then Vitor Motorin kicked a penalty and on half-time Vitor Gresev scored a try which Kushnarev converted.

In the second half César Sempere scored under the posts for Spain off a Russian error but then Russia pulled away with three tries, Vadisav Korshunov from a maul and then two created by the backs for Aexey Panasenko and Motorin.
