Spain's hopes live on

Sun, 16 Nov 2008 00:11

Spain beat Germany 22-11 at the Campo Central Ciudad Universitaria, in Madrid on Saturday to keep alive its hopes of ending in the top three of Division 1 of the European Nations Cup.

The top two go to the 2011 World Cup and the third-placed of the six teams gets another chance through répechage. Last weekend Spain suffered the disappointment of defeat at the hands of Russia in Moscow.

The chief scorer for Spain was new cap Camille Riu. The flyhalf scored 17 points.

Spain scored a try through Ignacio Martín.

The Germans were certainly not out played and it was only great tackling by Martín and fullback César Sempere that kept them out in the early part of the match.

The teams each scored just one try and that in the first half. At half-time Spain led 16-8 - two penalties, a drop and a conversion by Riu and Martín's try just before the break to a penalty and a try by Wiedeman.
