Hartley unaware he'd been tripped

Mon, 08 Feb 2010 13:58

Dylan Hartley has stated that he was completely oblivious to the fact that he had been tripped by Welsh lock Alun-Wyn Jones.

One of the defining moments of England's victory over Wales was Jones' trip on the English hooker that resulted in his being yellow carded by referee Alain Rolland.

England were able to score 17 points while Wales were down to 14 men after the controversial incident, that Hartley claims he was unaware of at the time.

"I did not know the trip had happened," Hartley told the South Wales Echo.

"I thought I had just fallen over my own feet.

"It was only when I got up off the ground that people told me that I had been tripped up."

Jones' moment of madness cost his side dearly as his dismissal into the sin-bin gave England the opportunity to take control of the game.

"We were very clinical when Wales were down to 14 men," Hartley said.

"I look back to the autumn series when we had opportunities but we did not take them.

"We were dominant when they had 14 men and that was an important factor in our victory.

"So it was a great way to kick off the Six Nations.

"There were a lot of positive things but we are not going to get too ahead of ourselves," he concluded.
