Gatland's loose forward conundrum

Mon, 08 Mar 2010 14:55

Sam Warburton: In contention for the starting XV

Flank Sam Warburton has no major injury concerns and will be in contention for a place among the loose forwards Welsh side to play Ireland in the Six Nations.

Warburton was forced to leave the field with a calf injury during the Cardiff Blues 29-20 defeat to Leinster in the Magners League, but doesn't appear to face any time on the sidelines.

Cardiff Blues boss Dai Young is confident that Warburton will be available and in Wales coach Warren Gatland's plans.

"His calf was tightening up and he was worried he was going to pull it," Young told the South Wales Echo.

"But he will have no problems with Wales."

Warburton is competing with Martyn Williams for a starting berth in the side at openside flank.

The loose forwards are an area with a few question marks with the fitness of captain Ryan Jones uncertain after a calf injury, and a possible call-up on the cards for Gloucester No.8 Gareth Delve or a reprieve for Andy Powell.

Powell has put his golf buggy debacle behind him and is concentrating on his rugby after featuring in the Blues 22 against Leinster.

"Andy wanted to put everything behind him and just get back on the field.

"He is too good a player for the Blues and Wales to ignore for too long," Young concluded.
