Phillips bringing self-belief with him

Tue, 16 Mar 2010 12:08

Wales star Mike Phillips is hoping that his strong self-belief can rub off on the rest of the squad for their final Six Nations clash with Italy on the weekend, when the abrasive scrumhalf makes a welcome return to the disappointed squad.

Richie Rees has done a commendable job at No.9 in Phillips' absence, but the British and Irish Lion is widely regarded as the best player in his position in Europe, and looks set to earn his spot behind the pack.

Sitting on the sidelines with a long-term injury has been frustrating for the Ospreys man, a situation compounded by the national team's flagging fortunes on the pitch.

A 27-12 defeat to Ireland was the latest disappointment in a tournament that has also included losses to England, France and a last-second win over Scotland, and Phillips admits that it has not been pleasant viewing for Wales fans.

"It was not pretty [the loss to Ireland]," he told the Western Mail, "It has been frustrating and the same story right through the tournament.

"It is a fine margin between winning and losing and we have not taken our chances at key times.

"I can feel the players' frustrations and when you lose it seems like the end of the world."

Warren Gatland, the notoriously outspoken Wales coach, was left fuming in the wake of the Croke Park capitulation, and promised his squad a week of 'pain' in training.

Phillips says he can fully understand the New Zealander’s anger, but he is also expecting things to change for the better – beginning this weekend against the Azzurri.

"He is really annoyed and rightly so," said Phillips, "The boys have always put 110% in training, although I suppose the intensity will have to go up this week."

"We have to tweak a few things and show that the Welsh team will be back up there as a force before long.

"It is a sign of a good person, how they front up and show on Saturday."

Phillips has earned a reputation as a player with a strong belief in his own abilities, and he is hoping that confidence can have a positive effect on a squad in need of a boost.

"I want to be as much a positive influence as I can and bring something to the team," said Phillips, "I see myself as somebody who has tried to lead on the field throughout my career.

"I always try to give 100% and play with a lot of passion and pride. That is important and I think the people love to see that. Hopefully I will be able to bring that to the side."

"There will also be my will to win and competitive edge."
