France v England: French player ratings

Sun, 21 Mar 2010 00:40

France managed to hold on for a 12-10 victory over England at the Stade de France to win the Grand Slam on Saturday.

While the home side adopted a fairly conservative approach they were able to deal with everything that England managed to throw at them.

Strong scrumming and ferocious counter-rucking managed to stall any attack that England were able to conger up.

Rugby365 rates the French players

France

15 Clement Poitrenaud:
Fielded balls at the back efficiently and defended well by kicking back at England whenever they tried to get some territory. He also joined the line well on occasion.
7/10

14 Marc Andreu: Replaced by Julien Malzieu
Never had very much space to run into and came in-field looking to work.
6/10

13 Mathieu Bastareaud: Replaced by David Marty
Didn't have the pace to keep up with the other backs and didn't live up to his reputation as Mike Tindall never had a problem marking him.
4/10

12 Yannick Jauzion:
Wasn't given the ball to run with as often as he would have like but made some meaningful tackles in the midfield.
6/10

11 Alexis Palisson:
Had a touch time opposite Mark Cueto and wasn't able to make any real impact on the match.
5/10

10 Francois Trinh-Duc:
Marshalled the backs well enough and was always available for a  clearing kick to relieve pressure and assist his scrumhalf.
6/10

9 Morgan Parra:
Was the dominant scrumhalf with some accurate passing and his goal kicking was superb.
7/10

8 Imanol Harinordoquy: Replaced by Alexandre Lapandry
Tackled like a machine and was a danger off the back of the scrum. His counter-rucking made a big difference at the breakdown.
8/10

7 Julien Bonnaire:
Worked hard in the tight-loose and made things very difficult for the English forwards to secure clean ball.
7/10

6 Thierry Dusautoir:
Was his usual excellent self with some brilliant tackling and poached several English balls. His work in loose play was tireless.
9/10

5 Julien Pierre: Replaced by Sebastien Chabal
Had a hard working game without standing out.
6/10

4 Lionel Nallet:
Was good at first receiver and had a strong outing in the line-outs.
7/10

3 Nicolas Mas:
Was a force to be reckoned with in the scrums but didn't offer a lot in loose play.
6/10

2 William Servat: Replaced by Dimitri Szarzewski
Had a good day finding his jumpers in the line-outs and was a useful runner in the loose to bash the ball up.
7/10

1 Thomas Domingo: Replaced by Jean-Baptiste Poux
Was the best front row on the park and took Dan Cole apart in the scrums. He also made some good yards with ball in hand and generally had a great game.
9/10

16 Dimitri Szarzewski: On for William Servat in the 52nd minute
Wasn't able to make use of the open style of play he prefers with the slow wet conditions, but did a good job with his tight forward play.
6/10

17 Jean-Baptiste Poux: On for Thomas Domingo in the 54th minute
Scrummed well and was a good choice for some fresh legs to do the hard work up front at the end of the game.
7/10

18 Sebastien Chabal: On for Julien Pierre in the 60th minute
Not enough time to be rated

19 Alexandre Lapandry: On for Imanol Harinordoquy in the 60th minute
Not enough time to be rated

20 Dimitri Yachvili:
Wasn't used

21 David Marty: On for Mathieu Bastareaud in the 49th minute
Was a few good breaks after coming on before being forced into a more defensive role that he accepted and made some good tackles.
6/10

22 Julien Malzieu: On for Marc Andreu in the 72nd minute
Not enough time to be rated
