Mauro Bergamasco appealed against his 13-week suspension and had it increased to 17 weeks!
Bergamasco was cited and accused of eye-gouging Lee Byrne when Italy played Wales on 26 January 2008. The Six Nations' disciplinary committee found him guilty and suspended him for 13 weeks. Bergamasco admitted guilt and apologised but appealed against the length of the sentence.
Bergamasco's appeal was heard by the Six nations' appeal committee, chaired by Rod McKenzie of Scotland) and comprising Jeff Blackett of England and Richard McGhee of Scotland. The committee not only rejected the player's appeal but increased the suspension to 17 weeks.
The suspension ends on 23 June 2008.
