An experienced coach, Feeney has also been in charge with North Harbour and Bay of Plenty NPC sides while he had stints as assistant coach for Fiji, as a Sevens coach with world title-winning Fiji while he also had two years coaching in Japan.

He also coached East Coast to three Heartland Championships between 2006-08.

Umaga described Feeney as 'an excellent acquisition for the club'.

"Paul has excellent experience and a good track record. He has done an excellent job in the Blues' environment with our development team.

"Paul has the advantage of knowing a number of our players and this unique environment in Auckland and, of course, understands the new culture of change that this organisation continues to strive for," he said.

Feeney, who will move into the new role at the end of the NPC season was excited to work alongside Umaga.

"I'm looking forward to being a part of the new environment at the Blues," he said.

"The fact that I have coached a large number of the squad with Auckland and the Blues Development team will be hugely beneficial."

The Blues organisation also announced the appointment of Kylie Wilson as mental skills coach.

A veteran of 40 games for Wales, Wilson has worked with the New Zealand Under-20 side, and Auckland and also in Olympic and targeted sports as well as the Silver Ferns.
