Born and bred in KwaZulu-Natal, Lambie is regarded as one of the most talented and level-headed players around.

He will no doubt prove to be a great mentor, calming influence and role-model to a relatively young Sharks squad.

"Pat's records and performances over the years speak volumes about the calibre of player he is," Gold said.

"He is a natural born leader, who has shown on numerous occasions that he possesses all of the qualities needed to be a great captain, especially captaining a team he has supported all his life.

"Both Pat and I are aligned with our vision to take the Sharks forward and I respect and admire his commitment to Sharks rugby, he has my full support and backing.

"Pat has earned the respect of his fellow players and management alike and he's a tough competitor that leads by example.

"I have no doubt that his presence and commitment shown on the field will inspire and motivate the players around him," added Gary Gold.

Commenting on his appointment, Patrick Lambie said: "It is a huge honour for me to be involved in the leadership group at the Sharks.

"For as long as I can remember, I've come to KINGS PARK to watch my team play.

"Firstly to play for the Sharks and secondly to be considered as a leader is amazing, and a dream come true."

He further added, "There is a good mixture of youth and experience in the squad. We will all be working together with positivity and eagerness, making sure the team always comes first."

Lambie will be ably supported by the colossal figure of Springbok loose forward Marcell Coetzee, who has been named vice-captain.

"Marcell's tenacity and fighting spirit will compliment Pat's captaincy approach and he will fit into the captaincy role with ease when called upon, in the absence of Pat," concluded Gold.
