Holmes wants more intensity

The Australian team were outplayed in most areas of that game against the Crusaders and Holmes, who will be making his first start this season against the Brumbies, believes they have to show more aggression on the field of play if they are to compete this season.

"As a group we were not happy after the game last week," said Holmes. "It was a trial, but they put 30 points past us and it was something we addressed as a group.

"We are going to lift our physicality and intensity – or come Round One we are not going to be ready. We are definitely looking to lift our game this week."

Holmes will be wanting to lead the way in this regard as he is one of the few senior players in a young Reds squad. The 32-year-old Wallaby hopes some of his experience will rub off on some of the team's greenhorns.

"You got to lead the way and show a few young guys the ropes and a few tricks here and there," said Holmes.

"There is a lot of weight on my shoulders to help guys get going this year."

Holmes is also excited to see new teammate and Japan star Ayumu Goromaru in action.

"Everybody has seen  at the World Cup what he can do – he is an amazing player and an excellent kicker.

"If our forwards can do the job and earn a few penalties, he can slot the goals. That would be great," he added.
