Jantjies out of June Tests

Jantjies will undergo surgery on his fractured finger on Tuesday and should be out of action for three to four weeks.

He will miss his team's crunch Super Rugby clash with the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

Jantjies, who was the frontrunner for Springbok No.10 jersey, is set to miss the Springboks' first two Tests against Ireland – essentially ruling him out for the entire series.

Patrick Lambie is now set to be the Springboks' playmaker during the Ireland Series.

The injury is a big blow for Jantjies. He has been in outstanding form for the Lions in this year's Super Rugby campaign. However, it’s not the first time this season that Jantjies has suffered a potential season-ending injury.

The 25-year-old, capped twice by South Africa in 2012, injured his wrist earlier in the Lions' campaign; but was later cleared to continue playing, wearing a wrist guard.

New Springboks head coach Allister Coetzee will announce his first Springbok squad in Cape Town on Saturday (May 28).

Jantjies will likely return to action when the Lions face the Sharks in Johannesburg when Super Rugby resumes after the June international window.

Meanwhile, the Lions will be short on flyhalf options ahead of their clash with the Bulls. Jaco van der Walt injured his knee in the 52-24 win over the Jaguares and will be out of action for six weeks.

In other injury news, loosehead prop Corne Fourie will undergo a late fitness test this week after sustaining a cartilage injury.
