The 27-year-old pivot, who heads off to the Irish province Connacht after the Super Rugby season, 30-odd pervious appearance for the Lions. However, this season he has been relegated to the Currie Cup team, with twice capped Bok Jantjies staring in most of the Lions' games.

However, Jantjies fractured his finger in the win over the Jaguares last week and underwent surgery this week – which will rule him out for about six weeks.

Flyhalf is not the only position where injuries forced Lions coach Johan Ackermann to make changes to his team for the trans-Jukskei derby.Boshoff gets pivotal role against Bulls

In other rotational changes Malcolm Marx, Andries Ferreira, Warwick Tecklenburg and Rohan Janse van Rensburg all get a start against the Bulls.
