Jaguares contract a 'foreigner'

Last year, in their Super Rugby debut, all the players were Argentinians living and playing in Argentina.

The player is Nicolás Freitas, a centre/wing of Centro Charrúa, a Montevideo club, some 200 kolimetres across the mouth of River Plate (Rio de la Plata) from Buenos Aires.

Freitas has been contracted to play for the Jaguares and was in their starting XV for their warm-up match against Uruguay at the  Buenos Aires Cricket & Rugby Club on Monya.

He played on the left wing.

In November the 23-year-old played centre for Uruguay against Romania and Spain and earlier in the year he played against Chile and Argentina.

Los Teros lost 10-36 to Romania, 16-33 to Spain and 7-71 to Argentina, but beat Chile 22-13 in the South American championship.

Esteban Meneses, head coach of Los Teros, recommended Freitas to the Jaguares management as a possible back-up where the Jaguares are weakest.

Since his acceptance, Freitas has been training with the Jaguares under Raúl Perez.

Freitas said: "This chance I did not imagine possible, but since I heard that it was a possibility I have been very happy and have my mind set on taking full advantage of it. I know that it will serve me very well in my career."
