Accuracy key in Umlazi showdown

The Cheetahs sent a team of fringe players to take on the Stormers in Harare last week, while the Sharks will step out for their first pre-season action at the King Zwelithini Stadium.Accuracy key in Umlazi showdown

Cheetahs coach Franco Smith admitted the focus will "change a bit" this week, after he fielded a host of players who have not played in more than six months in the outing in Harare.

"We will look to iron out some of the issues from last week, but our main focus will be to be more accurate," he told rugby365, when asked about the goals for this week.

He said because the ball will be slippery, as a result of the high humidity, concentration on getting the basics right will be key.

"We will also look to be more accurate in defence, even though it wasn't that bad against the Stormers," he said.

"We conceded a lot of turnovers and some players ran out of steam towards the end.

"That is why the focus will be to step up our defence and for players to get back into position as quickly as possible."

The two matches will allow both sides to run the bulk of their mains squads.

The Cheetahs have mixed it up slightly more, with the Sharks' A Team to be captained by Patrick Lambie, while Cheetahs captain Francois Venter is still sidelined with an injury.

Venter, who first injured his ankle during the Currie Cup season and aggravated it on the South Africa's year-end tour, underwent surgery in December.

He was expected to be sidelined for three months, which meant he would have missed the Currie Cup champions' first few Super Rugby games.

However, Cheetahs coach Franco Smith told rugby365 that he is making his return much sooner than anticipated.

It is unlikely, but possible, that his rapid recovered could see him being available for their opening match of the season – against the Lions in Bloemfontein on February 25.

The first match will be played in two halves of 30 minutes each, but the second match will be two halves of 40 minutes.

Due to the matches being a pre-season friendlies, there will be rolling substitutions.
