No early plea Lions star Kriel

Mon, 17 Apr 2017 11:17

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: There will be no early plea for Lions flank Jaco Kriel and he will appear in front of a formal SANZAAR judicial hearing.

Kriel was cited for a late tackle on Stormers flyhalf Robert du Preez, in the 26th minute of his team's historic 26-19 win at Newlands t the weekend.

Kriel is alleged to have contravened Law 10.4(o): Late-charging the Kicker.

All SANZAAR disciplinary matters are in the first instance referred to the foul play review committee - to provide the option of expediting the judicial process.

For a matter to be dispensed with at this hearing, the person appearing must plead guilty and accept the penalty offered by the foul play review committee.

Kriel's case will be forwarded to a formal hearing.

The Judicial Committee for the Hearing will be Andre Oosthuizen (Chairman), Eroni Clarke and David Croft which will be held by video conference.

A date and time for the hearing are still to be confirmed.

* Meanwhile, the Lions' victory came with a hefty price, as the Johannesburg-based franchise was dealt an injury blow ahead of their encounter with the Jaguares this coming Friday.

The Lions' star centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg injured his knee in the first half and was replaced by Harold Vorster.

Janse van Rensburg is set to undergo posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) knee scans to determined the magnitude of the injury.

Good news for the Lions is that fullback Andries Coetzee passed his concussion test on Monday, April 17 and have started his return to play protocol.

Coetzee suffered a concussion when he 'collided' with the shoulder of Stormers loose forward Nizaam Carr just before half-time and was replaced by Sylvain Mahuza.

The injury update from the Lions, also stated loose forward Ruan Ackermann have sustained some bruising and will not take part in any contact training during the week.

Dillon Smit is set to make a return on April 24 from his hip injury.

The scrumhalf passed his strength test on Monday and will undergo his rehab program during the week.
