'Grumpy' Hurricanes to ramp it up

The Hurricanes boss described their game against the Brumbies in Canberra this past Friday as "sloppy" and "terrible" at times.

"We're pretty grumpy to be honest," Boyd told a post-match media briefing.

"We thought that's probably our worst performance out of our last three," he said.

"We were sloppy and loose and ill-disciplined and inaccurate for the third game in a row, which is a concern for us.

"But at the end of the day we managed to re-correct and refocus and sort out what was important and put out a better second half.

"It's certainly not perfect and we're going to have to be better than that, wherever we play next week.

"That sort of performance is not going to be good enough to keep us going."

The Hurricanes will play either the Lions or Sharks in the semifinals, with the two South African sides to clash in Johannesburg later on Saturday.

"TJ [Thomas Perenara] just said it was a sloppy performance for us and it was," Boyd told local media, referring to his scrumhalf's summary of the grinding win.

"We were really disappointed at half-time.

"I think it's our poorest performance in the last three games we've played and we can't walk away happy.

"At times we were terrible and we won ugly but we can't keep doing that."

The team will be camped in Sydney to watch the South African quarterfinal and will hope the underdog Sharks can upset the Lions, who finished the regular season top of the standings.

A Lions win would mean the Hurricanes board a long-haul flight to Johannesburg but a Sharks victory would mean hosting the Durban side in Wellington.
