Stormers hang on to edge Jaguares

The home side scored three tries on their way to victory but they didn't have it all their own way throughout the 80 minutes.

After leading 22-6 at one stage, the Stormers allowed the Jaguares back into the game for a tense last 20 minutes at Newlands.

The Jaguares showed how dangerous they can be from broken-field play when they ran the Stormers' defence ragged in the opening five minutes with some slick handling and aggressive running.

The visitors took the lead in the fifth minute when Nicolas Sanchez converted a penalty after a Nizaam Carr high tackle.

The Stormers had a few opportunities to set-up their trademark driving mauls in the opposition 22, but their execution was poor. The Jaguares also did a good job to disrupt the Cape side's rhythm.

Blindside flank Cobus Wiese nearly opened the scoring for the home side when he broke through the Jaguares defence five metres from the tryline before losing control of the ball when he crossed the tryline.

However, the Jaguares failed to get out of their 22 from a scrum deep inside their 22 and a turnover led to centre Damian de Allende getting the ball before he stormed through the Jaguares' defence to score the game's first try. Damian Willemse converted for a 7-3 lead in the 20th minute.

Two minutes later the Jaguares were only one point behind when wing Emiliano Boffelli slotted a long-distance penalty kick after some indiscipline from the Cape side.

The Stormers were then given a man advantage in the 27th minute when Joaquin Tuculet was yellow carded for not rolling away in his 22 when the Stormers were in the midst of a dangerous attack.

Willemse extended the Stormers' lead to four points from that penalty.

The Stormers then extended their lead in the 32nd minute when captain Siyamthanda Kolisi got the ball deep inside the Jaguares' half from a set play before beating four defenders to score his side's second try. Willemse could not add the extras as his conversion attempt was charged down.

The Jaguares had one last opportunity to cross the tryline towards the end of the first half, but the Stormers' defence held firm. At half-time, it was 15-6 in favour of the home side.

The Stormers made the perfect start in the second half when they launched an attack straight from the opening kick-off. The ball went wide to Raymond Rhule who threw a neat dummy before racing away for his first Super Rugby try for the Stormers. Willemse added the extras from a tight angle and the Stormers were looking pretty at 22-6 ahead in the 43rd minute.

The Jaguares would eventually get the first try of the game when wing Boffelli broke through some poor Stormers' defending deep in the Cape side's half to race in for the score. Sanchez converted the try to reduce the deficit to nine points.

A Willemse penalty in the 57th minute made it 25-13 to the Stormers as the Jaguares started to struggle with their discipline.

The Jaguares were then given a sniff when Stormers hooker Ramone Samuels was given a yellow card for cynical play in his own 22.

With the Stormers a man down up front, the Jaguares opted for a five-metre scrum from the penalty and their numerical advantage resulted in a seven-point penalty try for the visitors in the 68th minute.

The Jaguares had a few of opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the game, but mistakes, poor decision-making and poor execution stifled them.

Instead, it was the Stormers who would have the final say of the game with another Willemse penalty to seal the win.

Man of the match: Damian Willemse was excellent on attack, but the award goes to Nizaam Carr for his all-round performance on attack and on defence.
