The Stormers overcame many setbacks like injuries and illness to produced a win over the Blues – who arrived in Cape Town full of confidence after their 38-35 win over the Lions.

The Cape Town-based side were eager to eclipse their disastrous Australasia tour, and proved good of their task as they raced to a 24-3 lead at the break.

Stormers head coach Robbie Fleck praised his side's first-half performance and their 'attention to detail' defensively in the second half.

"Pretty stoked with the win," Fleck told reporters after the match, adding: "Happy with the first half performance.  Think we lost our way in the second half in terms of work rate and intensity.

"Nonetheless, that was to be expected giving the challenging week we had with 80 percent of the group  being sick,"

"The guys showed great character, I think the first half set the tone for the rest of the game. Our passes stuck and things that we have been working on, like completing our phases and getting over the try-line were important this week.

"Furthermore, our attention to detail in our defence was excellent, didn’t give the Blues' players like Ioane bothers (Akira and Rieko) and Sonny Bill Williams  any space or time to operate,"

However, the Stormers' inability to produce the positive results away from home is a huge concern for the mentor. In particular with two away fixtures against the Bulls and Lions after their encounter with the Reds at Newlands this weekend.

"Out of our first nine-game six of it are away – we have the Reds on Saturday and then it's three tough South African opposition away (Bulls, Lions and Sharks).

"So our challenge is we need to learn how to win away from home.

"We didn’t do it successfully last year when we only managed to beat the Cheetahs and Bulls away [at the end of the seaon].

"However, when it really counts we need to learn how to win away from home, especially in New Zealand.

"This team need to understand that if we can play like we do at home this when we away we can overcome the opposition,"
