King's doubles a century apart

Tue, 12 Aug 2008 09:58

Two students from King's College at the University of Queensland will be the first student pair from the college to tour overseas with a Queensland side in almost 100 years.

University flyhalf Jono Lance and wing Luke Morahan have been selected for the Reds' tour of Europe, which leaves next week to play three matches in Ireland and one in France.

A former Australian Rugby Union (ARU) National Talent Squad (NTS) member and Australia A schools representative, Jono Lance, 18, is the son of former Canberra Raiders Rugby League premiership winning captain and now NRL coach, Dean Lance.

Fellow NTS member Luke Morahan, also 18, has travelled the elite pathway of Queensland Under-16, Queensland Schools and Australia A Schools before making his presence felt in Premier Colts and Premier Rugby this year.

According to the College, the last time two King's students were picked for a Queensland Rugby tour was in 1914, when brothers Eric and Stan Francis were selected to tour.

Wing Eric went on to become the first Wallaby for the University of Queensland and according to historian Jack Pollard was also the first international representative from Ipswich in any sport.

The Reds squad will leave Brisbane next Tuesday, August 19, two days after the Queensland Premier Grand Final, and play matches against Irish provinces Ulster, Connacht and Leinster and French club side, Nice.
