Explosive wing Fetu'u Vainikolo, a draft player with the Highlanders earlier this year, has decided to permanently move south and has signed with Otago until the end of 2010.
Otago Rugby Football Union (ORFU) chief executive Richard Reid said Vainikolo was transferring from Northland to Otago at the end of the current Air New Zealand Cup season.
"We are pleased to sign a player of Vainikolo's talent," Reid said.
"He had an excellent Super 14 with the Highlanders this year and we have expressed our interest in him for some time," Reid added.
Otago coach Steve Martin said: "It is exciting to have Vainikolo in our plans for next year for Otago and the Highlanders. He is a proven try scorer who is a strong ball carrier who has a good swerve and pace."
Vainikolo, 23, was the top try scorer for the Highlanders this year with six tries and has played for Northland in their last two Air New Zealand Cup seasons.
