Lions lose out on Southland star

Two weeks ago the Lions announced the acquisition of Southland’s Willie Rickards; but the New Zealander has since declined the 'offer'.
The Lions recently released a statement announcing the signing of the Southland midfield back, along with American Test loose forward Todd Clever, for their 2009 Super 14 campaign.
However Southland coach, Simon Culhane ,told New Zealand reporters that he was unaware of any move and that Rickards definitely won't be joining the Gauteng-based team next year.
"At this stage he is signed with Southland until the end of next year," Culhane said.
"I have spoken to Willie and there was an option for him to go overseas. As far as I know, he is not going to take up that option," he added.
Rickards is considered surplus to requirements for the Highlanders' 2009 Super 14 campaign, having previously represented the franchise. He may well feature for the New Zealand Sevens team in the IRB George and Dubai Sevens tournaments in December.
