The Southern Kings are closing in on the signatures of ex-Stormers coach Alan Solomons and former Springbok centre De Wet Barry as part of their efforts to revive rugby in the Eastern Cape.
Solomons was in charge of the Stormers when they reached the Super 12 semifinals in 1999, and was behind the King's impressive debut showing against the Lions.
He is a coach with vast experience and is renowned for his tactical acumen, and his ability to attract big players would be a major boon to the region.
De Wet Barry played under Solomons at the Stormers, and is biggest name amongst a list of players that the Kings are looking to recruit, which also includes many former EP schoolboys who are plying their trade for other teams in South Africa and abroad.
The big plans for the franchise are being headed by EPRU acting chief executive officer Anele Pamba, who will utilise the services of a former SARU CEO Rian Oberhozer, whose company is in charge of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium; the home of the Kings.
"We, with the assistance of Rian Oberholzer, are keen to organise a match between the Southern Kings and a World Barbarians team in either December or January at the new Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium," Pamba told The Herald.
"The franchise issue will once again be the focus of attention once the tour by the British and Irish Lions has been completed.
"It is now in the hands of the Saru executive," Pamba said.
