Daley keeps Reds on the winning track

Fri, 29 Jan 2010 14:05

Reds captain Ben Daley scored two tries in the opening half to set up a 20-12 win over the Crusaders in their second Super 14 pre-season trial match at Ballymore on Friday.

The win follows the Reds' 26-24 shock of the Waratahs last week.

Daley capitalised on some strong forward play and some promising attack from fullback Peter Hynes to give the Reds a commanding 17-5 lead at the break in front of a healthy crowd of 5827.

Flyhalf Ben Lucas added seven and Tim Walsh three points in a perfect game for both with the boot, while the Crusaders crossed the line through No.8 Thomas Waldrom and centre Robert Fruean.

New recruit Will Chambers gained some valuable experience in his first game of professional rugby, spending 60 minutes on the paddock.

While the Reds had rolled out the heavy artillery for their second pre-season game, the Crusaders did not field any All Blacks in their starting XV. All Black Isaac Ross started on the bench.

Although Dan Carter was the first of the Crusaders big-name All Blacks to front for training this week, he did not feature in Brisbane. Other All Blacks - Richie McCaw, Brad Thorn and Kieran Read - are not expected back until February 1, while Andy Ellis and Corey Flynn will return to training next week.
