Late Lowe try clinches Hurricanes win

Fri, 05 Feb 2010 12:37

A try by replacement flank Karl Lowe from an interception 70m out gave the Hurricanes a three tries to two 17-12 win over the Chiefs in Roturua on Friday afternoon.

The game was played in hot weather, with the kick-off arranged for 15.00 local time to help the Chiefs get accustomed to playing in the heat they will face in South Africa in the next fortnight. This was the final Super 14 pre-season warm-up game for both teams.

The Hurricanes led 10-7 at half-time through unconverted tries by right wing Tamati Ellison and flank Scott Waldrom, with flank Tanerau Latimer scoring a try for the Chiefs which flyhalf Stephen Donald converted.

A try by captain-for-the-day Sione Lauaki (No.8) put the Chiefs 12-10 ahead before Lowe's clincher late in the game, which was converted by replacement flyhalf Aaron Cruden.

Both teams cleared their benches but none of the replacements were for injury and both camps will be happy that there were no injuries of any consequence.

For the Hurricanes this was a third win on the trot after having beaten the Blues and Brumbies in their first two pre-season fixtures, but for the Chiefs it was a third consecutive defeat, having lost to the Highlanders and the Blues as well.
