Burger 'definitely' fit for Lions game

Sat, 06 Feb 2010 22:31

There was some anxiety for the Stormers, and among the crowd of 40,000 at the historic first rugby match to be played at the new Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, when Schalk Burger suffered a shoulder injury.

But the news from the Stormers camp is good.

"We were all a bit nervous about it, but fortunately Schalla is fine," said Stormers coach Allister Coetzee after the game in which the Stormers beat a Boland XV 47-13.

He added: "It's just a muscle injury to the shoulder".

Burger came off after 14 minutes and sat with the Stormers replacements on the bench at the side of the field, holding an ice-pack on his shoulder.

Coetzee had initially been keen for Burger to have more pre-season game-time ahead of next Saturday's opening Super 14 fixture against the Lions in Johannesburg, but the coach was not too concerned about it.

"He's one of the players with very good lungs and engine. It's a matter of making sure my captain is ready for next week against the Lions.

"He will be ready - definitely," said Coetzee.

There may be less happy news for Stormers centre Paul Bosch, who dislocated an elbow and was taken to hospital to be scanned.

Coetzee said it was fortunate that the doctors had managed to put Bosch's elbow back into place on the field, but he was clearly in pain when he came off. It is not clear yet for how long he will be out of action.

Bosch is highly regarded by the Stormers as one of their backup inside centres for Juan de Jongh.
