No censure for Burger, Nonu

Tue, 09 Mar 2010 09:10

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) will not be instituting any disciplinary process against Stormers' captain Schalk Burger - and Hurricanes' inside centre Ma’a Nonu's tip tackle on Juan Smith has gained no official censure from SANZAR.

Burger struck referee Mark Lawrence on the upper arm during the Stormers' match against the Highlanders at Newlands on Saturday. The incident took place in the last minute of the first half when Lawrence was trying to stop a minor scuffle between Burger and Highlanders' captain Jimmy Cowan.

SARU Manager of Referees André Watson reviewed video footage of the incident and after discussion with Lawrence, decided that no further action would be taken.

Lawrence had said on Sunday that there was nothing untoward in the incident and Stormers' head coach Allister Coetzee stressed that it had been an accident.

Nonu's tip tackle - commonly called a 'spear' tackle - on Cheetahs' skipper Juan Smith in Bloemfontein on Saturday elicited no citing from South African citing commissioner Andy Prior.

Nonu was given a yellow card by referee Bryce Lawrence for the dangerous tackle, after assistant referee Jonathan Kaplan had recommended "at least a yellow".

South Africa's head citing commissioner, Freek Burger, had the weekend off and Prior deputised for him. In consultation with the New Zealand and Australian citing commisoners, Prior decided not to cite Nonu.
