Injury scare at training: Bulls' scrumhalf Fourie du Preez
An uneven area on the surface of the Bulls' training field almost played havoc with the team's Super 14 campaign when Fourie du Preez sprained an ankle during Monday's practice and had to be assisted off the field.
It was an immediate end to the day's training for Du Preez and provided a big scare for the Bulls, but the diagnosis is that it is a minor injury and Du Preez is expected to be fit to return to training later in the week.
The medical advice is that if he takes it easy during the week, he will be ready to take his place as scrumhalf and vice-captain for the Bulls against the Highlanders at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
Less happy news for the Bulls, though, is that lock Bakkies Botha's recovery from his achilles tendon injury has been slower than expected and he will not take part in the Bulls' Australasian tour, which begins in Perth on March 27.
"We're not considering Bakkies for the tour. He will stay home and carry on with the rehab programme he's on," Bulls' team doctor Org Strauss told the media on Monday.
Great news for the Bulls is that No.8 Pierre Spies' injured back, which put him out of the game against the Waratahs, has improved to the extent that he will be fit for the match this weekend.
Springbok wing Akona Ndungane and hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle have also made good progress from their injuries and will be back next week ahead of the Bulls match against the Hurricanes. They are likely to play for the Blue Bulls in the Vodacom Cup before being considered for inclusion in the Super 14 squad.
Centre Jaco Pretorius' quad injury will keep him out for another fortnight.
