Cheetahs won't lose momentum

Wed, 10 Mar 2010 13:03

After their team's victory over the Hurricanes on Saturday - by some way their best performance of the Super 14 - this may have been a good week for the Cheetahs to build momentum, but their coaches believe the bye this weekend will not hinder their campaign.

The Cheetahs' next game is against the Stormers at Newlands on March 20 and this week provides an opportunity to recover and to prepare themselves for the Stormers' match, followed by a clash with the Reds in Bloemfontein and then four games in Australasia.

Head coach Naka Drotské told Die Volksblad the bye had not come at an ideal time but that the team would at least take their break with self-confidence restored.

"We would have preferred being able to retain the momentum, but there is nothing we can do about the bye - it was arranged long before the series started.

"Perhaps it's a good thing that we can rest with self-confidence," he said.

Drotské said there would be no complacency among the players.

"We need to stay switched on for our two games in South Africa before we go on tour. It's important to remain positive before the tour."

Assistant coach Hawies Fourie reiterated that the two games in SA before the tour were important. He believed the foundations for a better tour this year would be laid in these two games.

The Cheetahs are not content to be merely competitive and Fourie told Die Volksblad that they were going to Australia and New Zealand with the specific goal of earning log points.
