Reds prop Laurie Weeks was Thursday confirmed as the first Australian-based signing for the Melbourne Rebels, the 15th team in next year's expanded Super Rugby competition.
The Rebels announced that Weeks, the 2009 Australian Super 14 rookie of the year and widely tipped as a future Wallaby, had signed with the franchise for the start of the Super 15 season in 2011.
The new Melbourne outfit, to be coached by former Wallaby coach Rod Macqueen, previously announced English flyhalf Danny Cipriani as their first signing.
The Rebels have said they have already signed six players, although only Cipriani and Weeks have been confirmed.
The Rebels are thought to have targeted Australia wing Peter Hynes, All Black flank and Reds vice-captain Daniel Braid, as well as fellow Reds Adam Byrnes and Richard Kingi.
Stormers loose forward Duane Vermeulen, along with the Sharks' Springbok brothers - Jannie and Bismarck du Plessis - have also been linked to the Melbourne outfit in recent reports.
