Blues boot out Howarth

Sat, 03 Jul 2010 16:39

One out, one in: Pat Lam stays; Shane Howarth goes

The Blues have decided to part ways with assistant coach Shane Howarth, but head coach Pat Lam has been spared the axe.

In a statement on Saturday, the New Zealand Rugby Union and Blues confirmed that the Blues confirmed that the role of assistant coach is to be advertised.

"The decision to advertise the role was taken by the NZRU on the recommendation of the coaching Review Panel that has conducted its 2010 season review of Blues head coach Pat Lam and assistant coach Shane Howarth," the statement said.

Howarth is eligible to re-apply for the assistant coach position.

The Review Panel consisted of NZRU Board Member Graham Mourie, NZRU High Performance Coach Development Manager Mike Chu, Blues Chairman Greg Muir, Blues CEO Andy Dalton and Blues directors Grant Fox and Gary Whetton.

The coaching position will be advertised from Sunday 11 July.

The decision follows after another disappointing season for the Blues in which they managed just seven wins from 13 starts and finished mid-table.

The former All Black and Wales international, Howarth, had been working alongside Lam for two seasons, with this past season's seventh place barely better than the ninth-place finish the year before.
