Dagg on a new Crusade

Fri, 13 Aug 2010 07:28

Game-breaker: New Kiwi star Israel Dagg. (c) Gallo

The Crusaders - the most successful Super Rugby franchise - scored another coup when All Blacks fullback Israel Dagg announced that he would play for the Christchurch-based franchise next season.

Dagg will move to the Crusaders from the Highlanders, where he has played for two seasons.

Crusaders head coach Todd Blackadder was understandably delighted to have the 22-year-old fullback on his books.

"We are very happy to have secured Israel for next season's inaugural Super 15 competition and beyond," Blackadder said.

"He is a special talent and we're sure he will fit in at the Crusaders very well."

Dagg, who is in the current All Blacks squad, has signed with the Crusaders for two years.

The fullback, who made his Test debut against Ireland in June, has played in four Tests this year.

His move will further weaken the Highlanders, who have struggled in recent years - both on and off the field.

The Crusaders, who dominated the Super Rugby for a decade-and-a-half and won the last of their seven titles in 2007, were the only New Zealand franchise to reach the Super 14 semifinals this year.

According to New Zealand media reports All Black flank Adam Thomson is also considering a move from the Highlanders to the Crusaders.

In a rare bit of good news for the Dunedin-based Highlanders franchise it is reported that Crusaders utility back Colin Slade, a player on the fringe of All Blacks selection, could move south.
