Masoe called into All Blacks squad

Sun, 29 Jun 2008 09:09

Chris Masoe has replaced injured All Blacks' captain Richie McCaw in the All Black squad for the two tests against South Africa.

All Blacks' coach Graham Henry says Masoe's experience against the Springboks, and his knowledge of the team's systems, made him the right choice.

Rodney So'oialo has been confirmed as captain in the absence of McCaw, while Chiefs' lock Kevin O'Neill joins the squad as cover for Ali Williams, who - like McCaw - is recovering from an ankle injury. Henry says they expect Williams to be fit for Saturday's first test in Wellington.

Former All Blacks loose forward Alastair Scown has fully endorsed the decision to call in Chris Masoe. Scown says it was what he thought would happen, because of Masoe's previous involvement in the squad.

Chris Masoe last played for the All Blacks during the world cup quarterfinal loss to France in Cardiff last year. He was a second half replacement for Jerry Collins.
