NZ vs Aus: Wallaby player ratings
Sat, 19 Sep 2009 14:05
The Wallabies ended a disappointing Tri-Nations in disappointing fashion, succumbing 33-6 to a far superior All Black side in Wellington on Saturday.
The Wallabies were dominated in all facets and never got any form of momentum going. It is difficult to identify exactly where Australia lost the match as they were never in it, and none of the players really stood up to the All Black barrage. The scrums were a mess which offered little to either side, but otherwise it was all New Zealand. They were outclassed in all departments and Robbie Deans has a lot of work to do if he is to turn this team into a world-beating side.
Tim Human rates the Wallaby players…
15 James O'Connor:
The Force youngster is a bit like Francois Steyn in that when he's good, he's spectacular and when he's bad, he's awful. Today he was bad. 3/10
14 Lachie Turner:
His
weak tackle was shrugged off by Toeva and he offered little on attack. Turner tries hard but is distinctly unspectacular. 5/10
13 Adam Ashley-Cooper:
Looked dangerous with the ball once as he weaved his around some All Black forwards, but had very limited opportunities otherwise. 6.5/10
12 Berrick Barnes:
The odd good tactical kick and slotted a well-struck drop-goal. 6/10
11 Drew Mitchell:
Should have hauled in Jane to prevent the opening score. Kicked decently. 5.5/10
10 Matt Giteau:
Try as he might he just couldn't ignite any form of sustained attack. He was strangely ineffective, which never bodes well for his team. 5.5/10
9 Will Genia:
After a magnificent performance in Brisbane, he was anonymous in
Wellington. Still the best bet for the Wallaby No.9 jersey though. 6/10
8 George Smith (Captain):
Made the occasional burst with ball in hand, but he couldn't halt the All Black assault on the breakdown. 6/10
7 David Pocock:
Industrious, but ultimately ineffective. 5.5/10
6 Rocky Elsom:
The strongman did little in terms of ball carrying and was outplayed by his opposite number Thomson. 5/10
5 Mark Chisholm:
Worked hard on defence and at the lineout and made the odd burst in the loose. 6/10
4 James Horwill:
Struggled at lineout time in the second half. 5/10
3 Ben Alexander:
Made some big hits in defence. Difficult to judge in the jumbled scrums.
6.5/10
2 Tatafu Polota-Nau:
His lineout throwing was solid for the most part, but made very limited impact around the park. 5/10
1 Benn Robinson:
Gave as good as he got at scrum-time. 6/10
Replacements:
16 Stephen Moore (on for Polota-Nau at 49 minutes):
The lineout suffered with his introduction. 4/10
17 Pek Cowan: (On inside the last twenty minutes)
Getting run over by Nonu was his only noticeable contribution. 4/10
18 Dean Mumm:
Not enough time to be rated
19 Wycliff Palu: (On inside the final twenty minutes)
Not enough time to be rated
20 Luke Burgess:
Not enough time to be
rated
21 Quade Cooper:
