Flynn gets the 'all clear' for ABs

Tue, 29 Jun 2010 10:02

The All Blacks received a timely boost with the news that back-up hooker Corey Flynn has been given the all-clear to join the national team as they build up for their first Tri-Nations Test against South Africa in Auckland on July 10.

In a brief statement on Tuesday the New Zealand Rugby Union said Flynn, who has fought his way back from an ankle injury, passed a check-up with All Blacks medical staff in Christchurch.

Flynn, who turned out for New Zealand Maori when they beat England 35-28 last Wednesday, will join Keven Mealamu as one of two hookers in the All Blacks squad.

Flynn, who has battled a succession of injuries that have blighted his career, was promoted from the unbeaten New Zealand Maori team ahead of Aled de Malmanche, who was dropped from the 28-man Tri-Nations squad.

Tighthead prop John Afoa will also cover hooker at short notice if required, the All Blacks coaches said.

The All Blacks assemble in Auckland on Thursday for a three-day training camp, before they begin preparations for their opening Tri-Nations test against World Cup holders, South Africa, next Saturday.

The two teams meet again in Hamilton a week later, before the Tri-Nations action shifts to Brisbane - where the Springboks and Wallabies go head to head.

The All Blacks and Wallabies them meet in back-to-back Tests - Sydney, July 31 and Christchurch, August 7 - before hostilities are resumed in South Africa.

The Boks face the All Blacks in Johannesburg on August 21, before they host the Wallabies in back-to-back Tests on August 28 (Pretoria) and September 4 (Bloemfontein).
