Cooper gets two weeks

Sun, 25 Jul 2010 09:15

As was the case with Jean de Villiers, Quade Cooper has been suspended for two weeks for his dangerous tackle of the tip variety on Morné Steyn in Saturday's Test between Australia and South Africa in Brisbane.

The suspension means that he will miss the next two Tests between Australia and New Zealand, which is a blow for the Wallabies. The Tests will be in Melbourne and Christchurch.

In the match itself, unlike the case of Jean de Villiers, Cooper was penalised and yellow carded, as was the case of Jaque Fourie in the second minute of the match.

Bok ace Fourie's sentence is not yet known.

Both Cooper and coach Robbie Deans expressed their disappointment at the decision and Deans said the Australians would consider appeal against the suspension.

They have 48 hours to do so.

"‘To come off a good hard win over the Boks last night and to come here is very disappointing," said Cooper, "but at the same time I'm just looking forward to getting back on the field as soon as possible."

Deans added: "Obviously Quade's disappointed and we're disappointed but we're in the process now of contemplating where to from here. We may contemplate appealing."

The lower end of the IRB's recommended tariff of suspensions for such a tackle is three weeks.
