SARU President Oregan Hoskins has seemingly dismissed the idea of Jake White returning to the role of head coach of the Springboks, by saying that Peter de Villiers' coaching ability was 'on a par' with that of his predecessor.
Hoskins has admitted concern over the world champions' woeful Tri-Nations campaign thus far, but insisted that sacking the coach was out of the question.
"We're concerned about the losses," Hoskins told the Cape Argus.
"We shouldn't change the personnel - in other words we shouldn't sack the coach. I wouldn't say he's the best coach in the world, but I wouldn’t say he's inferior to Jake White. I'd say they are on a par," he continued.
Hoskins confirmed that De Villiers would, indeed, appear before a review panel - in the next week or so - but the SARU boss stressed that there was nothing untoward over this "review".
The SARU boss said that it was De Villiers's odd-ball character and poor relationship with the media, rather than his coaching ability, that concerned him most.
"My issue with the coach is his media comments - I think that detracts from his ability. That's where I'd like to concentrate," he told the newspaper.
The comments indicate that De Villiers will continue on as head coach until at least the World Cup next year, and any shake-up of the management team would then possibly threaten the jobs of his assistants - Gary Gold and Dick Muir.
