Shimlas edge UCT in Cape Town

The Bloemfontein side scored three tries to UCT's two in what was a scrappy affair on the Green Mile.

Earlier, NWU-Pukke put in a commanding performance to beat UP-Tuks 38-15 in Pretoria. Pukke flyhalf Barend Janse van Rensburg starred in that game with two tries.

In the other games in Round One – Maties scored six tries to thrash CUT-Ixias 40-0, while UJ edged NMMU-Madibaz 19-12 in a thriller in Johannesburg.

*In the Varsity Shield, Wits smashed TUT 53-0 and in Cape Town it was UKZN-Impi who came out on top in their match with UWC, bagging a 24-13 win.

We take a look at all the Round One action!

UCT-Ikeys 17-23 UFS-Shimlas

The Shimlas showed just why they are champions when Arthur Williams crashed over for a try after six minutes with the Free State team using their scrum dominance to set up the score.

UCT looked more threatening on attack as the first half progressed, however handling errors at crucial moments let them down.

In fact, both teams struggled to handle the ball on attack in what was turning out to be a very scrappy game.

With two minutes remaining until half-time, the home side found themselves down to 14-men after prop Joel Carew was yellow carded for a dangerous cleanout at a ruck.

Shimlas tried to make good use of the man advantage before the break, but had to be satisfied with their 7-0 lead after squandering good possession again.

UCT eventually broke their drought five minutes into the second half when fullback Khanyo Ngcukana bashed his way over the line after a fantastic pass by captain Guy Alexander. However, the conversion went wide and the Cape side found themselves still two points behind the champions.

The score remained the same until the game's second strategy break.

The Shimlas then took the game by the scruff of the neck after No.8 Nardus Erasmus went over for a try after a powerful scrum five metres from the UCT tryline. With ten minutes left, Shimlas led by seven points.

Shimlas wing Mosolwa Mafuma then seemed have put the final nail in UCT's coffin three minutes later with a nine-point try after the away team found space in the UCT defence out wide.

UCT were not going to lie down and got themselves back in the game when replacement Nathan Nel scored a seven-point try after a grubber kick. Hilio de Abreu converted and UCT were just nine points behind Shimlas with five minutes to go.

Time would eventually run out for the Cape side, but they did manage to bag a losing bonus point with a De Abreu penalty just before full-time.

UP-Tuks 15-38 NWU-Pukke

NWU-Pukke's pack of forwards were dominating the opening exchanges and they seemed intent on trying to maul their way to the first points of the game.

Shimlas edge UCT in Cape TownThey eventually opened the scoring after UP-Tuks were unable to secure clean possession from a line-out five metres from their own tryline with Pukke lock Walt Steenkamp pouncing on the loose ball to score the try.

Pukke then extended their lead a minute later with the first nine-point try of the season after a breakout from their own half resulted in a try for Barend Janse van Rensburg. After nine minutes Pukke found themselves 18-0 ahead.

After a Tuks penalty, it was that man Janse van Rensburg again who stretched over for his second try of the game after sustained pressure in the Tuks half. At half-time Pukke had a commanding 25-3 lead.

Pukke fullback Rhyno Smith stretched his team's lead soon after half-time with a long range penalty before prop Andrew Beerwinkel got Tuks' first try of the game.

Smith slotted another penalty in the 55th to keep the scoreboard ticking over for Pukke  as Tuks started to look more threatening with ball in hand.

Tuks did eventually get their second try after the ball was spread wide inside the Pukke 22 to big wing Duhan van der Merwe who sprinted over for the score. With 20 minutes left the score read 31-15 in favour of Pukke.

However, with nine minutes left Pukke put the game to bed after a well-worked move saw centre Sylvian Mahuza dive over in the corner for the bonus-point try. Smith converted and Pukke found themselves leading by 23 points.

In the end it was a comfortable win for the visitors.

Maties 40-0 CUT-Ixias

Maties made a blistering start to the game and were rewarded when captain Beyers de Villiers scored the opening try next to the CUT polls. Theo Stapelberg converted the try to give his team a 7-0 lead after two minutes.

Shimlas edge UCT in Cape TownThe Stellenbosch side doubled their lead before the first strategic break when big No.8 Jacobus van Dyk crashed over the line from a strong scrum.

Van Dyk scored his second try a few minutes later with the Maties looking unstoppable on attack. Stapelberg got his team's fourth try after the Maties stole possession from a CUT line-out. At half-time, Maties were 26-0 in front.

It took Maties 13 minutes after the break to regain their scoring form when hooker Craig Corbett went over for a try after a powerful driving maul to stretch Maties lead to 31 points.

The Maties would have one last say in the game when replacement Edwill van der Merwe scored a seven-point try after a great break by fullback Craig Barry.

UJ 19-12 NMMU-Madibaz

Both teams took some time to get going,  with the first points of the game coming via a penalty from UJ flyhalf Divan Nel after 15 minutes.

After a delay due to lightening, UJ extended their lead with another penalty to lead 6-0 after 28 minutes.

Shimlas edge UCT in Cape TownThe Madibaz finally got onto the scoreboard five minutes before half-time when flyhalf Simon Bolze reduced the deficit to three points after converting a penalty.

UJ extended their lead with another two penalties in the first 20 minutes of the second half to lead 12-3 and were looking much more comfortable with their game.

However, the match was then turned on its head when NMMU scored a seven-point try, which was successfully converted to bring them level with UJ at 12-12 with just 15 minutes remaining.

The home side did not want to settle for a draw and got the match-winning try three minutes from time to bag the four points..
