They occupied the field for a few minutes before the chaos started. Disgruntled fans decided to charge onto the field and deal with the situation in a manner they saw fit – violence. While some protestors were able to high-tail it away from the ensuing crowd, others were not so fortunate.

Tackles were made, punches were thrown and kicks landed with ferocity.

Varsity Sports CEO Duitser Bosman released the following statement following the incident:

"We have contingency plans in place for dealing with match interruptions.

"The possible disruption of matches due to pitch invasion by individuals and groups with other agendas on our campuses, was discussed at length at previous Varsity Cup board meetings.

"A decision was made to respect the challenges universities face. No special rules were put in place to deal with disruptions, as our current competition rules are sufficient."
